The Columbia University Libraries seeks a temporary Library Assistant IV in the Periodicals & Microform Reading Room of Butler Library.
Salary Range: $20.68/hour ($20.16/hour for new hires)
Wednesday – Friday: 3:00pm – 11:00pm
Saturday: 10am – 6:00pm
Sunday: 12pm – 8pm
Schedule subject to change during semester intercessions and summer terms. Schedule subject to change based on staffing needs.
THIS IS AN ONE YEAR TEMPORARY POSITION FROM DATE OF HIRE
Process periodicals volumes for binding using computer binding software; pack boxes for shipment to the bindery on a weekly basis; update periodical holdings records in the Voyager integrated library management system (ILS) to reflect items bound; perform quality control on volumes returned from the bindery and resolve problems relating to periodicals binding; place orders for missing issues and identify volumes to bind incomplete.
Answer patron questions concerning the periodicals and microform collection in PMRR and provide general assistance with microform paging, maintaining, and operating microform readers/scanners and desktop scanning workstations; process, check-in, label, stamp, and shelve incoming journals, newspapers, and microforms.
Train and supervise student workers in a variety of tasks relating to PMRR room usage and collections, including shelf-reading, shifting, paging, assisting patrons with using microforms, scanning, and media viewing equipment, processing and boxing microfilm, searching, and scanning microforms for Interlibrary Loan requests.
Acting as a back-up to other PMRR support staff and for opening or closing stacks, graduate reading rooms, and/or undergraduate reading rooms.
Implement and monitor special projects focusing on the maintenance of the microfilm collection;
Perform stacks maintenance functions for the Butler Library stacks, and graduate and undergraduate reading rooms, including shelving, sorting, arranging, pickups, shelf-reading, straightening, shifting, labeling, stacks opening and closing procedures.
Perform other duties as required, including retrieval of newspapers from newsstand, shelf-reading and shifting, entering statistics.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Strong customer-service orientation.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to respond to customer-service inquiries via email, telephone, and in-person.
Strong attention to detail, initiative, and the ability to be self-directed about work assignments.
Ability to lift, pull, and pu sh heavy items up to 40lbs.
College education preferred.
Experience working in a library.
Knowledge of an integrated library system (ILS), preferably Voyager.
Knowledge of serials and periodicals and the ability to work with and understand bibliographic records.
Working knowledge of one foreign language.
